For the 30th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall, Adrian Luz designed a brutal installation. It was on view the whole year at the Benhadj & Djilali Gallery declared Museum for this purpose.
In the most immediate way, the work confronts visitors with the physical reality of closed borders: one has to use physical effort to climb over or through the installation in order to at all enter the space.
Visually, "The Wall" looks like a space-filling graphic sculpture, yet through the physical participation it tells in an almost performative way of cruelly exercised power relations - but of the subtle and individual possibilities to overcome or also undermine them!
The welded-in-place, metal sculpture allows, in the widest sense, the creative maneuvering in the personal search for one’s own happiness within a superimposed system.

Inaugurated on November 22, 2018 and running through November 2019, the exhibition became a platform featuring twenty international artists, human rights activists and guest speakers, welcoming more than two-thousand art lovers.
Artists as well as attendees have left their mark on his 'wall' – color, text and emotions, human experiences contributing to the final outcome of his creation.

On November 9, 2019, exactly 30 years after the Fall of the Berlin Wall, Adrian Luz began breaking his exhibition wall in an artistic manifestation, representing the overcoming of walls.

Adrian Luz
ARTIST Adrian Luz grew up in Tijuana, Mexico and Los Angeles, California, and spent numerous years in Paris, France.
His multicultural experience has given him a deep understanding of the need, and a unique perspective on how to connect cultures to each other and people to their community and environment.
For this reason, he designs and builds large-scale art installations that transform everyday places of transition into spaces of communication, reflection, and wonder by using the universal element of light to bring people together.

CURATOR Yasmine Benhadj-Djilali is a German architect of Algerian descent, and founder of the Benhadj & Djilali Gallery, turned Museum, focusing on commercial and simultaneously cultural socially relevant exhibitions and projects, which aim to attract widespread attention among the public and the media.
Cities under extreme socio-political conditions - border walls, separation, segregation and human division have been the focus of her research ever since she taught at Darmstadt University (1998-2003).
